On this page are the lesson plans for each of the five days of the mental health unit. Each lesson is accompanied by its summary, learning targets, and essential questions. The lesson plans will walk teachers through how to conduct the lessons for each day of the unit. Lesson Plans

Lesson plan one: Mental health Overview

This lesson plan gives a broad overview of mental health. Included in this lesson plan is a brainstorming activity where participants will create a concept map regarding mental health, an augmented reality activity defining phrases relating to mental health, an in-class discussion, and a survey activity.

  • define mental health and mental health literacy

  • identify reasons to learn about mental health

  • What is mental health literacy?

  • What role does mental health play in everyday life?

Lesson Plan Two: Mental Health Symptoms

This lesson plan gives an overview of mental health symptoms. It includes a brainstorming activity regarding participants' understanding of mental health, an augmented reality activity to introduce participants to mental health symptoms, an in-class discussion, and an exit slip.

  • identify common symptoms of mental health problems

  • evaluate attitudes toward mental health

  • What are common mental health symptoms?

  • What attitudes are held regarding mental health?

Lesson Plan Three: Mental Health and the Self

This lesson plan gives an overview of self-care. Included in it is a mindfulness activity, an augmented reality activity that introducing self-care basics, participants creating their own self-care augmented reality video, a gallery walk, and an in-class discussion.

  • define self-care and describe the importance of self-care

  • identify ways to practice self-care in their own lives

  • What is self-care?

  • How can someone practice self-care?

Lesson Plan Four: Mental Health and Others

This lesson plan gives an overview of how to relate to others with mental health symptoms. Included in it is a brainstorming activity regarding phrases about mental health, an augmented reality activity which involves the participants evaluating different scenarios, and in-class discussion, and an exit slip.

Learning targets of this lesson:

  • evaluate responses to mental health struggles

  • appropriately respond to a friend or family member struggling with their mental health

​

Essential question of this lesson:

  • What are appropriate and inappropriate responses to loved ones dealing with mental health struggles?

Lesson Plan Five: Mental Health Resources

This lesson plan provides participants with an overview of how to find mental health resources. In this lesson plan, there is a brainstorming activity regarding available mental health resources, an augmented reality activity teaching about mental health resources and how to find them, a research activity, and an in-class discussion.

  • identify different treatment options for individuals struggling with mental health

  • research appropriate treatment options for individuals struggling with mental health

​

Essential questions of this lesson:

  • What are resources for mental health?

  • How can people find appropriate resources for mental health?
